One of the most fulfilling on-going collaborations the Mattatuck Museum has is with the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Each month, the museum welcomes individuals with early onset dementia and their loved ones for a visit full of art viewing, art making, and community building. After reflecting on current exhibitions, participants take to the museum’s art workshop for crafting and good conversation.

A Memories @ The MATT Exhibition
The artwork on view in this exhibition reflects some of the art projects the Chapter has worked on this year. The blue and purple backdrops with bold black prints are inspired by Arthur Nager’s city photography. Participants manipulated colorful paper cutouts on black backdrops emulating Henri Matisse’s later works. Federico Uribe’s clever animal sculptures motivated the making of different masks. After learning about Georgia O’Keeffe’s love of the natural world, participants crafted paper-quill fish. Lastly, this May, participants crossed new terrain by contributing to a large mural that will hang in the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut. Designed by museum educator, Quinn Fabas-Smith, this mural features the Association’s logo – an outline of a brain and a beaker – signifying the Association’s dual commitment to supporting people and scientific research.

Come celebrate with us!
Memories @ the MATT’s “Collide: Art and Memory” Closing Ceremony on Saturday, August 23rd from 12:00pm – 2:00pm (remarks at 12:30pm.) Event will be in the Monteiro Community Gallery on the 3rd floor of the museum. Cheese, crackers, & non-alcoholic sparkling beverage served. Registrants receive free admission to the museum day-of.
Parking is available on Park Place Avenue in the lot directly behind the museum as well as in the second lot to the right of museum.
