More about this exhibition

Waterbury artist, Allison Medina, was chosen as the first-place winner of the Mattatuck Museum’s 8th annual juried art show, MIXMASTER 2023. Her work features a cast of animal and human characters who are busy with mischief and intrigue, contained within thrifted shadowbox frames. Medina’s imaginative constructions suggest “paper peepshows” or tunnel books, a Victorian art form that used layered paper cutouts to create immersive miniature worlds. Through these scenes, her work evokes the theatrical nature of both storybooks and stage productions. Alongside these elaborate creations, small portraits capture the big personalities of these characters. The mystery and nostalgia of Medina’s constructions and drawings resonate with audiences of all ages.
