SUMMARY:Opening Celebration: Fall 2026 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, October 11\, from 1–4 PM as we celebrate three exciting new exhibitions at the Mattatuck Museum!\nRemarks at 1:30 pm\n$5 general admission; reduced for the day.\nMembers receive Free Admission year round. Become a member today!\n\n\nMING SMITH: JAZZ REQUIEM – NOTATIONS IN BLUE\nAugust 29\, 2026–January 17\, 2027 \nMing Smith: Jazz Requiem – Notations in Blue is an invitation into a richly layered exploration of movement\, memory\, and visual rhythm. This exhibition traces photographer Ming Smith’s groundbreaking practice from the 1970s to the present\, drawing from Smith’s formative years traveling throughout Europe to scenes of life in the United States and capturing the intricacies\nof Black experience.\nOrganized by The Gund at Kenyon College. Support provided by Art Bridges \nLearn More \n\n\nSONJA LANGFORD: ARCHIVES OF CARE\nSeptember 26\, 2026–January 3\, 2027 \nSonja Langford’s research-based art investigates women’s experiences navigating the medical field. In Sonja Langford: Archives of Care\, the artist brings us on a journey through her research in local archives\, sharing the complex\, sometimes disturbing\, history of healthcare access and bodily autonomy through quilt-inspired wall hangings\, photography\, and installation projects. \nLearn More \n\nFRANNE DAVIDS AND THE WORLD SHE PAINTED\nOctober 10\, 2026–February 14\, 2027 \nFranne Davids (1950–2022) was born in Waterbury\, Connecticut\, and spent much of her adult life navigating schizophrenia by painting in the basement of the home she lived in with her parents. There\, she created more than 400 paintings\, mostly featuring feminine figures. These “girls\,” as she often called them in her titles\, were her friends\, imaginary people with whom she shared her otherwise-reclusive world. Franne Davids and the World She Painted will be the artist’s first museum solo exhibition.\nSupport provided by Post University \n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in America
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a delightful afternoon of good food and engaging conversations about local art and history!\n\n\n\nOrder ahead from Sweet Bella @ The MATT or bring your own lunch to enjoy. \n\n\nThis well-illustrated lecture traces the development of the celebration of Christmas from when it was outlawed in 17th Century New England through the late-20th Century when all the trappings of a traditional Christmas were in place. For many\, the celebration of Christmas today is the most important holiday of the year.  However\, many of the customs\, which we take for granted as part of the current holiday festivities and religious celebrations\, are actually a product of more recent history. The presentation will look at how Christmas transformed from a rowdy celebration to a family centered event. Among the topics discussed are how Christmas trees were raised\, halls were decked\, and Santa Claus came to town. \nTime: 12:00 PM– 1:00 PM\nPrice: Non-Member $10 | Member $5\nSponsored by: Christine & Eugene Shugrue \nRegister Here \nPre-registration is suggested due to limited spots.\nInterested in discounts\, free admission\, and more? Become a member today!
