SUMMARY:Exhibition Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Better Late Than Never: The Art of Arlene Brown \nWelcome to Better Late Than Never\, an exhibition that celebrates the creative spirit at every stage of life. The tongue-in-cheek title\, courtesy of Arlene Brown’s partner\, perfectly captures the artist’s joyful emergence onto the regional art scene. \nWhile creativity was a constant thread throughout Arlene’s childhood and college years\, life took a detour. She spent decades building a successful law firm from the ground up with her life partner. Yet\, art was never entirely left behind; between legal briefs\, she kept her passion alive through weekly community painting groups on Long Island with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) and hand-carving annual linoleum block print holiday cards. \nFollowing her retirement five years ago\, Arlene finally stepped up to the easel full-time. Embracing regular training\, she watched her distinct style confidently assert itself. Working primarily in oils\, Arlene creates paintings that are at once realistic and interpretative—capturing the quiet\, familiar essence of a scene while infusing it with personal vision. Now an active and award-winning member of Saratoga Arts and the Southern Saratoga Artists Society\, Arlene’s recent accolades include honors for her striking landscapes Bay State and Quiet Afternoon at the Barn. \nBetter Late Than Never is a testament to the idea that a passion deferred is never a passion lost. It invites us all to look closer\, appreciate the scenery\, and remember that it is always the perfect time to begin. \nExhibition Celebration:\nJune 25\n5–6:30 PM \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Student Film Screening: Waterbury 1901
DESCRIPTION: The Mattatuck Museum will host a special screening of Waterbury 1901\, an innovative short film created by students from Wilby High School\, on Monday\, June 15\, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. \nProduced by Wilby High School juniors Aniah Ogman and Aneisa Scott under the guidance of teacher Mike Drew\, the 20-minute film transforms historic photographs from the Mattatuck Museum archives into a vivid cinematic journey through turn-of-the-century Waterbury. \nWorking with the Museum’s Archivist and Librarian\, Caleb Weissman\, the students researched and selected images from the Museum’s extensive collections. Using artificial intelligence technology\, they colorized the photographs and animated them into moving scenes\, offering audiences a unique glimpse into life in the Brass City more than a century ago. \nNarrated by Tom Chute\, the beloved longtime voice of WATR Radio\, Waterbury 1901 combines emerging technology with local history to tell the story of a city shaped by industry\, immigration\, innovation\, and community. \nThe film opens with remarks from Mayor Paul Pernerewski\, but then the boundary between past and present disappears!  Local leaders and community members including Ron Napoli Jr.\, State Representative for Connecticut’s 73rd District; Robert Haxhi\, Joseph Begnal and Bob Burns\, Executive Director of the Mattatuck Museum not only provide expert commentary\, but assume the appearance of Waterbury citizens from 1901\, allowing the city’s past to live again!  \nFollowing the screening\, attendees will have an opportunity to meet the filmmakers and learn more about the project. The event is free and open to the public. \n  \n \nEvent Details \nFilm Screening: Waterbury 1901 \nMonday\, June 15\, 2026\n5:00–6:30 p.m.\nMattatuck Museum\n144 West Main Street\nWaterbury\, CT 06702

SUMMARY:22ND ANNUAL CONNECTICUT OPEN HOUSE DAY
DESCRIPTION:22ND ANNUAL CONNECTICUT OPEN HOUSE DAY\n\n\n\nSATURDAY\, JUNE 13\, 2026\n\nThe Mattatuck Museum invites visitors to enjoy two exciting experiences as part of Connecticut Open House Day. Through Access for All\, supported by Art Bridges\, admission to the Museum will be free for all guests throughout the day. Visitors can participate in Ask A Curator from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, where guest curator Camilo Alvarez will be available in the galleries to answer questions and engage in conversation about the exhibition Ascendancy: The Self in Contemporary Art. Guests can also explore a lineup of exhibitions on view throughout the Museum\, including About Face: 250 Years of American Portraits in the Whittemore & Noonan Galleries. Presented in celebration of the nation’s semiquincentennial\, the exhibition examines American history through portraiture\, exploring how artists across 250 years have represented identity\, citizenship\, and belonging. Visitors are encouraged to engage with an interactive portrait selfie station and community talk-back wall featured within About Face: 250 Years of American Portraits. \nAdditional exhibitions opening June 13 include Psychedelic Splendor: The Concert Art of AJ Masthay & Helen Kennedy in the Munger Gallery and Theodate Pope’s Highfield: A History in the History Gallery. \nPsychedelic Splendor: The Concert Art of AJ Masthay & Helen Kennedy showcases the vibrant and imaginative world of contemporary gig poster design through the work of Connecticut artists AJ Masthay and Helen Kennedy. Independently creating screen-printed posters for some of the most influential rock\, jam\, and counterculture bands performing across North America\, the artists bring together bold color\, intricate detail\, and psychedelic imagery in this dynamic exhibition. Featuring more than twenty works created for bands including Black Sabbath\, Dave Matthews Band\, Dead & Company\, Foo Fighters\, Goose\, The Grateful Dead\, Pearl Jam\, and Phish\, the exhibition marks the artists’ first museum presentation together and celebrates the evolving art form of concert poster design. Sponsored by Keith and Jane Mahler\, Manic Presents\, and Premier Concerts \n\nFree Admission Support provided by the Art Bridges Foundation
