Guided Walking Tours Downtown Waterbury
June 26, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm$20 – $25
Join The MATT for guided walking tours of Downtown Waterbury’s Historic District. Tours will be led by Edward J. Halligan, architectural historian and preservationist who has a special interest and expertise in the architectural and urban developmental history of American cities. Each will include a special look inside some of Downtown’s most distinguished architectural landmarks; some not normally accessible to the general public, and will conclude with a reception at the historic Drescher’s Restaurant on Leavenworth Street. The reception will include a complimentary glass of wine and shared appetizers as the conversation about the architecture and history of Downtown Waterbury continues. Extensive tour notes will be provided and tours will proceed rain or shine. Participants are invited to park in the large lot on Park Place behind the YMCA.
The Green, which has been called “one of the most attractive downtown parks in New England,” was the city’s first center, with the buildings around it representing all types of uses, from residences to churches to public buildings. The Green still displays an attractive array of commercial, institutional, ecclesiastical and residential architecture as well as handsome landscape design and interesting and memorable monuments. Meeting in front of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (74 West Main Street), this tour will include a walk inside St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Basilica and extend its reach down West Main Street to the glorious Palace Theater.
The Mattatuck Museum received support for this project from the State Historic Preservation Office with funds from the Community Investment Account of the State of Connecticut.
