Building Character: YMCA Architecture and Urban Culture
November 12 @ 5:30 pm
One event on November 19, 2019 at 5:30pm
Join architectural historian and preservationist Edward J. Halligan for a lecture on the influence YMCA architecture has had on American communities. Between the Civil War and the Great Depression, the Young Men’s Christian Association built more than a thousand community centers across the United States and in major cities around the world. By drawing on recent scholarship, Halligan will begin with the early history of the YMCA and explain the efforts of YMCA leaders to shape a modern yet moral public culture through its buildings from 1869 – 1930.
