Annual Orton P. Camp Lecture: Waterbury Activism, Brass Valley Strikes of 1920

In 1919 and 1920 over 15,000 brass factory workers from the Waterbury and Naugatuck Valley region went out on strike. Utilizing oral history interviews from the archive, newspaper clippings, FBI files, and factory administrative records, Mattatuck Museum Archivist, Stephanie Crawford will explore why the factory workers went out on strike, what their demands were, and how the people on strike were perceived as an anti-American threat.

In recognition of the lifetime commitment and dedication to the Mattatuck Museum, on May 2006, the Museum’s board established September 16th as Orton P. Camp, Jr. Day, honoring him annually on his birthday, with free admission to the Museum for all visitors and a program featuring a Museum project presented by a member of the staff.
